LED bulbs in traffic signals save electricity

Environmentally friendly LED bulbs are being installed in traffic lights at the city's 605 intersections. They won't save commuters time during rush hour, but officials say the upgrade will save the city about $325,000 a year.
"It's going to allow us to save 80 percent on our electric bill," said Patrick Hassett, assistant director of Pittsburgh's Public Works Department. "It's a no-brainer."
Public Works crews began installing LED bulbs during routine maintenance and repairs about five years ago, Hassett said. During that time, they converted about 5,000 bulbs.
In August, City Council awarded CLT Efficient Technologies Group of Carnegie a $2.2 million contract to change the remaining 16,780 bulbs. Crews started making the switch about four weeks ago and have finished about a dozen signals, Hassett said.
